St Luke's Church fast becoming a major city centre venue
06 July 2009
Since opening the doors of St Luke's (Bombed Out) Church way back in 2007 we have attracted over 52,000 visitors from all over the world. People from all walks of life have stepped through the doors into a garden of peace and tranquility to have a look at this really special place, spend a quiet moment, enjoy an exhibition or take in some culture.
During the Capital of Culture year we hosted 2 days of music as part of the city wide Streets Ahead festival, welcomed Yoko Ono's Sky Ladders for the Liverpool Biennial, and hosted three weeks of classic movies.
In 2009 we're extending our programme, and have already shown a number of classic films that have been really popular. Movie screenings will continue throughout the year (we're aiming for one per month) and we've already had some Shakespeare, newly devised theatre, art exhibitions and participatory workshops.
The programme for the latter part of the year continues with some really exciting work. July 16th will see Neil Campbell's GHOST STORIES, A NIGHT OPERA with live music and visuals set against the ruins of this neo-gothic splendour.
On July 19th we're hosting an event as part of THE BIG LUNCH (how aptly named!) which is an Eden Project initiative. We're bringing in some great musicians and music, and USL will of course be headling.
Later in the month the Peace and Ecology Festival returns on 25th July with poets, musicians, stalls, children's area and much more.
August will see the first exhibition by Liverpool's FAB COLLECTIVE - a group of very talented local photographers showing images of our fair city.
September continues with some new performances by USL, and in October we're working to bring some really special events into the city centre .. watch this space for details.
And amidst all this we will continue to show classic films.
What could be better? Great stuff in a great city centre venue. So next time you hear the question "what's going on down the bombed out church?" you can answer .... ALL OF IT!
